The Benaki Museum in Athens is one of Greece's most important museums of cultural history and was founded in 1930 by Antonis Benakis, who bequeathed his extensive private collection to the Greek state. The collections range from prehistoric times to the modern era.
The Benaki Museum's textile collection comprises significant holdings of Coptic, Byzantine, Islamic, and modern Greek textiles. It includes impressive embroideries, vestments, liturgical vestments, printed textiles, and traditional Greek costumes, thus enabling the study of weaving techniques, materiality, ornamentation, and intercultural transfer processes.
