Presentation about textile metaphors, etymology and mythology, the untold history of textile matters that reveal unsuspected connections between disparate domains of society. Through technological milestones that have radically changed our lives from prehistory until today, the tale is pieced together chronologically and thematically. It includes the invention of artificial light sources since the discovery of fire, the production of fibre from plants and animals to nanotechnology, architectural construction from tent to monument, networking from the earliest trade routes until the World Wide Web, the spinn-offs of spinning, the impact of the textile industry on economic systems, land reclamation using windmills and geo-synthetics, aero- and astronautics with balloons and woven wings, the digital revolution set in motion by the Jacquard loom, textile remedies in sport and medicine, natural talent in the animal kingdom, and finally, textiles disquised in musical instruments and the visual arts.

Vibeke Vestby & Cathryn Amidei: Working with the TC2 Jacquard loom
Wednesday 13 to Thursday 14 May (location no. 6).
Workshop price 150 Euro excluding materials (including coffee and lunch)
The aim of the workshop is to make the participants confident using the TC2:
Introduce the participants to the TC2 loom
Give an introduction to using Photoshop as the design tool for the TC2 loom
To weave a little sample
Participants have to bring their own laptop (PC/MAC) with Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements). We will provide weft materials, shuttles, pirns, bobbin winder and all other required equipment.
We will start with a simple two-color design with a limited size (around 400 x 400 pixels): We will cover basic methods to edit a design and assign weaves in Photoshop. We will first work with weaves for 1 shuttle, then for 2 /more shuttles. Each participant will be able to weave at least one sample.

Visits and Excursions (optional)

For most of the day trips we have found the assistance of a professional tour organizer, specialized in textile tours, Mrs Ine de Boer of idéBé Reisspecials (http://www.idebe.nl/). It has not been possible to just find some colleagues to show us around, also because of the dense traffic situation. Other visits will be called "informal". For all visits there is a deadline of 15.4.2015 after which you can only cancel if there is someone to replace you (we expect waiting lists). Accompanying persons, not registered for the conference, can take part in the visits & excursions but participants will have preference.

Visit to Tilburg on 13 May 2015
One-day trip by bus, departure from the conference hotel (location 2) at 8.00 h The costs of 95 Euro include all entry fees, coffee, lunch and transportation.
10.00 h Welcome with coffee at the Textiel Museum Tilburg with an introduction by the Director Mr. Erroll van de Werdt or Mrs Geertje Jacobs, Director Museum management. Further an introduction to the exhibition “Zero Squared” will be given followed by a tour through the museum under the motto “Experiment and Inspiration” stressing the making of textiles and the special products made in the museum. The well-known TextielLab (where textile artists/designers are able to experiment and produce with industrial machinery) and the “Zero Squared” exhibition can be visited. Having a look at further museum premises is a further option.
After the lunch in the museum cafe the trip will be continued with a visit to the Museum de Pont, a modern art museum in a former spinning mill. Approx. 18.00 h arrival in Leiden, depending on the traffic.

Visit to Amsterdam on 14 May
One-day trip by bus, departure from the conference hotel (location 2) at 8.15 h. The costs of 95 Euro include all entry fees, lunch, boat tour and ferry to the film museum Eye. We start with a visit to the newly re-opened Rijksmuseum with a general guided tour of about 1 hour, total time in this museum 2 ½ hour for further exploration. Than the group will go by bus to the former hospital “Wilhelmina Gasthuis” (WG), today an artists centre. Lunch will be taken at the WG cafe  on a terrace with view on the water. Than the ateliers can be visited a. o. of the well-known Dutch textile artist Marian Bijlenga, speaker at the ETN Conference.
14.45 h A special chartered boat at the “Leidsebosje” (10 minutes from the WG) will take us on a tour of 1 hour through Amsterdam. Afterwards time to visit the “Nine little streets”, the famous “Kalverstraat”, the almshouses courtyard at the Waalse Kerk, or the high-end “Bijenkorf” store. The group will gather again at a central point and take the ferry from the Amsterdam Central Station to the new spectacular architecture of the film museum “Eye”. Departure from there at around 19.30 h - 20.00 h arrival in Leiden, depending on the traffic.

Visits at the Leiden Textiel Festival on 15 May
As all of Leiden's inner city will be full of textile exhibitions, anybody is free to visit the different venues (www.textielfestival.nl/textielroute.php) between 13 and 16 May 2015 with the Pieterskerk (venue 3) as its central point, entree fee there € 12,50. For the ETN Conference participants there are special guided tours of about 2 hours each, departure from the Pieterskerk (location 3)

Symposium "Biodesign in Textile" on Monday 18 May
Symposium in English organised by the Dutch Textile Commission at the location no. 1. Dutch Folklore Day on 18 May
Departure at 8.00 h from the conference hotel (location 2) by bus to the Zaanse Schans (www.dezaanseschans.nl/en/). The costs of 95,- € is including entry fees, coffee, lunch and transportation. The traditional costume society “de Zaanse Kaper” will show us the costumes of that part of “Noordholland” (province). Further a visit to the Dyeing Mill “Verfmolen De Kat”, a walk of 10 minutes, is planned where the miller Piet Kempenaar will tell us about natural pigments and dyestuffs (www.verfmolendekat.com). A local restaurant De Kraai is our place for lunch this day. Than we move on by bus to the peninsula of Marken (http://en.wikivoyage.org /wiki/marken). Curator Neeltje van Altena of the Marken Museum will welcome us and organise our visit: One part of the group is visiting the museum with a special textile exhibition on traditional children's costumes; the second part will have a guided tour of  Marken. After about an hour the groeps will be exchanged. Departure from Marken is at 19.30 h, the bus brings us back to Leiden, arrival there around 20.00, depending on the traffic.

Visit to Leuven and Antwerp on 19 May
Departure 7.15 h from the conference hotel (location 2). The costs of approx.105,- € is including entry fees, coffee, lunch and transportation. Arrival at Leuven at 10:00 h to visit the company Materialise to be shown how 3D haute couture is created in this futuristic company.

Visit to the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam on 19 May
A curational visit at the Stedelijk Museum´s depot and textile collection. The group will be accompanied by ETN member Anne Mieke Kooper and will be guided by the Curator for Industrial Design, Ingeborg de Roode (ETN Conference speaker). For the first 15 participants there are no costs. Meeting place is NOT the Stedelijk Museum but the Depot Stedelijk Museum, Gyroscoopweg 15, Amsterdam (train Leiden-Amsterdam, station Amsterdam Sloterdijk, than a walk of 15 minutes; travel time about 50 minutes).


Textiles in the context of the Stedelijk Museum and Dutch Design, Ingeborg de Roode
The collection of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam holds around 90,000 objects, some 2000 of which are made from textiles. The collection encompasses large clusters of 'Bauhaus textiles', interior design and garment fabrics from the 50s and 60s and textile art created in the 60s and 70s. Ingeborg de Roode will discuss the role of Dutch textiles within the collection and the criteria that apply to collecting textiles today. She will also talk about textiles in the context of Dutch Design and the part played by Dutch designers in the international design world.
Ingeborg de Roode studied History of Art at the University of Leiden. From 1993 till 2001 she was curator for textile design in the Netherlands Textile Museum in Tilburg. She is currently curator for industrial design in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. She organised many temporary exhibitions of which the most recent one is 'Marcel Wanders: Pinned Up at the Stedelijk. 25 Years of Design'. For the reopening of the Stedelijk Museum in 2012 together with two colleagues she made the much praised design collection presentation. Her current research is on Dutch furniture design in the Amsterdam School Period and contemporary international industrial design.

Ingeborg de Roode

Readable structures, Joke Robaard
Since 2004 the Textile department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy is called TXT: Textile and Text, these both words derive from the latin verb tessere, which means to weave. From that moment the department has developed an ongoing investigation in combining material research to theoretical research. Students are developing new forms of materialities: weaving, felting, knitting, printing. Dusty techniques are polished and re-implemented as new craftsmanship. These materials are re-installed into different domains, in which they figure as half products, having the potential to communicate new readable strategic structures. The exchange between written words and these innovative materialities is continuously examined, tested, discussed, recycled and represented. There is an infinite array of possibilities for producing new textiles, in spheres, social webs and networks, garments and homes.
Joke Robaard is an artist/researcher and a theory tutor at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. She was the ´visionary`and coordinator of TXT (former textile department )and is currently the thesis supervisor of the final TXT year there. In her art practice Joke Robaard operates on the interface of social-geographical research, cartography and photography, connecting these with philosophy and material culture. Her work is an ongoing investigation into these fields and domains

The TextielLab, a laboratory for research and experiments at the TextielMuseum, Hebe Verstappen
The `beating heart`of the Dutch TextielMuseum is the TextielLab, a working place for research and experiments, in-between a specialised workshop and a laboratory for producing woven and knitted fabrics, prints, embroideries, tufted works and passementerie. Here designers, artists, students and companies from the Netherlands and from Europe, are assisted by project developers and technical experts to discover the endless possibilities in the exploration of yarns, computer-controlled techniques and handcraft. This can be done in commission by the designer, the artist or student but also upon the initiative of the museum or by other commissioners. The results of this production in the form of collection-commissions, but also the ´independent`projects created at the TextielLab, are shown in exhibitions or are added to the collection.The TextielLab is that special place in the Netherlands and in Europe where innovative prototypes and autonomous textiles are produced for a high-end market segment.
The collection, the extensive library, the sample and materials database, together with the educative programme are offering an important source of knowledge and inspiration to the visitors of the museum and to the users of the TextielLab.
All this together makes the TextielMuseum more than a ´classical`museum. It is building bridges between caring, showing and making. It is making a conscious step from cultural heritage and old craft traditions to innovation for the future.
Hebe Verstappen graduated in textile design at the Fontys Academy of Fine Art in Tilburg. In 2000 she started working as a freelance textile designer; from on 2002 she was working for the Belgium linen weaving mill Deltracom Bvba and was lecturer at the St Lucas Academy in Ghent. Since 2009 she has been working as staff member and since 2012 as the Head of the TextielLab of the Tilburg TextielMuseum. She is responsible for the artistic, creative and educative aims of this working place, overlooking its vision and management and initiating & selecting new projects to support this vision. She is making the links between designers, companies and the possibilities the TextielLab has to offer, thus promoting the name (and fame) of the Lab and the Museum in the Netherlands and abroad.

Innovative Textiles, Lenneke Langenhuijsen of  Buro BELÉN
Lenneke langenhuijsen and Brecht Duijf, founders of the design company BELÉN are designing from material. By broadening and expanding the material qualities of spaces, objects and products, they are creating tangible design for the future. Central to their approach are the intuitive, emotional and physical aspects of design, resulting in products and visions that show unexpected applications of material and colours, as well as revaluations of conventional techniques. One of their projects is Cambials a label that makes natural interior textiles out of wood. The production goes back to Tonga, a small island in the Pacific Ocean where the tradition of tapamaking is still part of daily life. Beating bark is an ancient handicraft and one of the earliest methods of making textiles. Nowadays big embroidery machines make it possible to connect the wooden fibers, so it becomes much more strong and washable.The collection Wooden Textiles can be used on the interior market, for wallpanels upholstery and more...
 Lenneke Langenhuijsen and Brecht Duijf graduated both cum laude from the Design Academy Eindhoven at the “Man & Well-being” Department. They worked on different projects a. o. the “Combed Cotton" project in 2012 in collaboration with TextielMuseum Tilburg and the "Bluered” project n collaboration with Tinctoria. Last year BELÉN won the "young talen pin award” and for the Wooden Textiles they received the first prize at "Open Design Italy”

The Importance of craftsmanship in Barbara Broekman´s work, Barbara Broekman
In her work, Barbara Broekman pursues a direct confrontation with the senses. The large scale, deep colours, suggested movement and tangibility of the materials invoke a sensual
experience. To stimulate, seduce and challenge people to have a close look: that is what Barbara Broekman aims to achieve.
In her work Broekman researches formal principles and the technical possibilities of whatever material she is working with. Her use of materials reveals a fascination with the creative power of mankind. A manual and hand-crafted execution is essential to her work. According to Broekman, insight into the process of creation is an essential part of experiencing a work of art. It allows the process of human creation to become visible and tangible. In her presentation Broekman will focus on this element of craftsmanship, as well as the role materials and technique play in her work and why it is so important to her.
Barbara Broekman, working as an artist since 1982, has a special relation with textile materials and manual skills. Educated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, she followed the Master of Fine Arts programme at the California College of the Arts in Berkeley, USA. Her work was represented in exhibitions like Art Amsterdam, Art Paris and Art Brussels (2012); "Amsterdam my town" in the Amsterdam Museum (2013), the KunstRAI in Amsterdam (2014) and "Art-Objet" a solo exhibition in Rotterdam (2014). Broekman has completed many large-scale commissions a.o. for the Royal Palace, Amsterdam (1993), for the "Queen Mary II" (2009) for the Palace of Justice in Amsterdam (2010 - 2013). Her work is a.o. in collections of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Tilburg Textile Museum, the Cooper Hewitt Museum, New York as well as in ministries & corporate collections.

Barbara Broekman

Material Mentality?, Simone de Waart
The lecture will show examples of current Dutch textile designs and  illustrate the sense of materials innovation for textiles.  The role of experiments will be discussed, experiments that both investigates in the possibilities as well as stretches the seams of craftsmanship, new materiality, technology, history and culture to create a textile future.
Simone de Waart  has a background in industrial design and design management. She graduated as materials designer at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. In 2002 she initiated the company Material Sense, where she is responsible as materials experts and creative director. Material Sense functions as a network that connects design, research, education and industry to enhance materials innovation. She advocates the selection of materials and their performances as a starting point in the design process to create value for new applications within a sustainable society.  Material Sense makes the world of materials visible and tangible. By international travelling exhibitions, publications, workshops, research and design projects, Material Sense shows ‘sensorial’ properties of materials in every sense of the word . The company works on materialisation processes, innovation and strategies for companies and institutes like amongst others Dorel, Dutch Railways, Volkswagen, the National Glass Museum Leerdam and the Dutch Textile Museum.Besides the work for the company she works as lecturer at the Technical University of Eindhoven and as guest lecturer at the Design Academy Eindhoven and internationally in China (Nanjing University), Estonia (Tallinn School of Design) and Mexico (Centro University).

Since Iris van Herpen’s first 3D printed piece took to the catwalk in 2011, a growing number of tech-savvy designers, fashion graduates and even a few high street labels have started to embrace the technology. When fashion and 3D Printing combine, the results have managed to capture the public’s imagination and spark conversation, but little is known about the process and challenges leading up to the big reveal. With this presentation, the aim is to give you a look behind the curtain of 3D printed fashion and show how designs by the likes of Iris van Herpen, Anouk Wipprecht, threeASFOUR, Studio XO and more are “materialised” using this incredible technology.
Joris Debo is the Creative Director of Materialise, a leading provider of additive manufacturing software and of sophisticated 3D printing services. He previously held the same post for Materialise’s consumer goods division, .MGX by Materialise, which features a line of design products that is currently exported to over 20 countries worldwide; has received many awards, including Good Design and Red Dot Design Awards; is featured in numerous international museums, including the MoMA and Metropolitan museum of arts in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris; and regularly appears in top design and decor publications such as: Icon, Surface Magazine, Elle Decor and Vogue Living. Over the course of the years Joris has built up a unique knowledge of 3D Printing for the art, design and fashion world and has worked closely with a number of leading artists and designers, helping them bring their visions successfully to life. As such, he has been at the forefront of many innovations in this industry. Joris holds a Masters degree in industrial design and has shared his passion for 3D Printing by speaking at Pratt Institute, Harvard, Parsons, Columbia university, MAD, and more.
Joris is also the Co-Founder and Managing Director of clothing and accessories brand Revisited.

Collecting and Structuring
Marian Bijlenga collects art pieces from colleagues. In her talk she will discuss how she came to be a collector and in what way the items in her collection influence her own work. The preference for structuring, arranging and connecting evident in her work is reflected in the way she handles her collection. The walls of her home and workshop constitute an extension of her way of working. Pieces produced by other artists become the building blocks of new elements in an interplay of colours, forms and structures, composed so that every object receives a specific place. Comparable to a house of cards, it is impossible to take any work away without disturbing the beauty and composition of the whole.
When asked if the pieces have a direct influence on her, she replied that it is the other way around: working with special structures allows her to find similarities and connections in items created by other artists. "It is nice and inspiring to be surrounded by art pieces. It is a reflection of the people around me", is Marian´s general comment on her collection.
Marian Bijlenga lives and works in Amsterdam. From 1977 to 1982 she trained as a textile artist at the Rietveld Academy, and Herman Scholten was an important teacher to her. She has participated in numerous international exhibitions, most recently "Asia - Europe II" at the Textile Museum, Krefeld, Germany, followed by the Musée Jean Lurçat et de la tapisserie contemporaine d’Angers (28th June 2014 - 4th January 2015). Her work has been included in the collections of the Museum of Art & Design, New York; the Craft Museum Finland; The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam; the TextielMuseum TilburgNL and the Centraal Museum, Utrecht/NL
