The Textile Centre Haslach in Austria shows this summer a special exhibition, which was put together by the Danish weaver Lise Frolund in spring 2022.

The six artists Wen-Ying Huang/Taiwan, Lia Cook/California, Monique van Nieuwland/Australia, Belinda Rose/Scotland, Grethe Sørensen and Lise Frølund/Denmark are considered pioneers of a new form of expression and work in the field of modern textile design. Together they can look back on more than 250 years of experience in the field of hand weaving, half of which time they have worked intensively on digital hand jacquard looms.

In earlier times, punch cards had to be punched in a lengthy process for the production of jacquard fabrics. Every change in the pattern involved an enormous amount of effort, so the technique was completely unsuitable for the production of small quantities and artistically unique pieces. When the Norwegian Vibeke Vestby developed a handloom in the 1990s that was equipped with digital pattern control and fitted into every studio and every art school, a new world opened up for textile designers. Suddenly, fitted, freely designed surfaces and individual pieces with pictorial motifs could be woven, which was previously only possible in the field of tapestry. Two looms of this type owned by the University of Art and Design Linz are also regularly used by students in a variety of ways at the Textile Centre Haslach.

The six weavers were - each in their own part of the world - real pioneers when it came to this technique. They have explored the possibilities of this tool for decades and have inspired and influenced many younger weavers with their work.
The exhibition does not show the great works - some of which can be found in museums and collections - but above all describes the way there. It makes it possible to understand how the loom is used, how the development process takes place and what possibilities and limitations the technology offers. It is the diverse intentions, rehearsals, working methods and materials that become visible. In addition to fabrics, handle samples and photos, there is also a video in the exhibition that provides insights into the studios of the 6 artists. The soundtrack was created by the Danish composer Hanne Raffnsoe.

We are delighted that Lise Frolund, who developed special fabrics on the Jacquard weaving machine at the Textile Centre Haslach years ago, is coming back to Haslach this summer with this beautiful exhibition in her luggage. She will arrive together with the second, award-winning Danish artist Grete Sorensen and set up the exhibition together with us. It is a great honour to have the two grand dames of jacquard weaving with us. They will also be present at the opening of the exhibition on Monday, July 11th.

Opening: Mon, July 11, 7:30 p.m
Duration: July 12 to October 2, 2022
Opening hours: Tue – Sun, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m
