A two-day training session, consisting of both lectures and workshops, will be held for professionals, textile conservators, and museum staff. The session will be led by Joan Sallas, a folding researcher, historian of the art of folding, and folding artist, on Saturday, October 12, from 14:00 to 17:00, and Sunday, October 13, from 10:00 to 13:00.

The art of folding and its techniques are found universally across cultures. In Western Europe, textile folding reached its height during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The session will explore the origins and development of folding in these periods, including the establishment of professional folding instruction and the history of historical folding books. Additionally, the introduction of folding practices to ecclesiastical and secular courts will be examined.

The session will also cover the evolution of folding materials, techniques, and sequences, along with their nomenclature. The process of selecting and approving folding motifs and their symbolic significance will be discussed, with particular focus on the ephemeral nature of folding as a distinctive feature.

Instruction will primarily be in German, with additional teaching available in English, French, Italian, Catalan, Spanish, and Romanian. Participation is limited to 12 individuals, and registration is required. The participation fee is CHF 300, plus material costs.
