Chemnitz in Saxony is the European Capital of Culture 2025 and involves partner municipalities around the city through the PURPLE PATH - art and sculpture trail as a cultural region. The Textile and Racing Museum Hohenstein-Ernstthal (TRM) is involved with its exhibitions!
The exhibition 'T.O.P. Future' by the three internationally renowned textile artists Pascale Goldenberg (D/F), Gabi Mett (D) and Judith Mundwiler (CH)was opened in May. The artists are not only friends, they formed the so-called Textile Open Project - 'T.O.P.' for short - a few years ago. 'T.O.P.' - to develop new ideas for projects and exhibition formats. With their new project 'T.O.P. Future' for the TRM, they are focussing both with the future of humanitarian life as well as with the cultural and industrial history of the region and, in particular, the themes of the Museum - to be discovered and seen until 17 August 2025.
'T.O.P. Future' represented a new challenge in order to repeatedly reinterpret previous artistic approaches in a different context again and again and from different perspectives, to find imaginative approaches and take innovative paths. The three artists concentrate on the material - used, found material with its own stories already inherent in it stories that are freshly interpreted and combined with various textile and non-textile techniques.
On the one hand, the exhibition presents works on the elementary of a humanitarian life and thus of a life in the future, such as the elements air, fire, water and earth, which are shown in the special exhibition room of the TRM. On the other hand, traditions are used as a starting point for ideas for the future: Works made from materials from the museum draw attention to regional and open up creative possibilities for change and transformation. This creates an unusual network of art and industrial culture.
Some of the art installations are directly related to the weaving machines in the show workshop 'Jacquardweberei', so that these interventions complement and expand them, even opening them up experimentally to questions of the future. Through links to other industrial regions, not only the new art objects, but also existing exhibits in a different light.
In a microcosm, both areas of the exhibition allow the idea of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 come to life in a microcosm.
