Snelheid verstilt – exhibition by ETN member Pauline Nijenhuis

Project HAND@WORK, Photo by the artist

In this exhibition artist Pauline Nijenhuis examines the acceleration in our time. The retrospective exhibition in the beautiful medieval accommodation of Dat Bolwerck presents Pauline Nijenhuis wide range of artworks. Her textile paintings, photo works and three installations of the projects: Fast Work Time-consuming Landscape, HAND@WORK and Echo of Suzhou are to be seen. This last photo project is inspired of her residential stay at Suzhou, China in 2019.

‘In my work and projects I investigate the acceleration in our time.
During the painting process I set the delay, to finally, still in the labor intensive and contemplative embroidery by hand.‘

The price of increasing speed
Increasing speed in today’s Western society has a big influence on our lives, and the way how our surroundings and the landscape look like. Through automation processes, use of robots and the world of multimedia. What impact has increasing speed on our observation. Can our brains perceive the growing amount of fast pictures? And what are the consequences? Do we make the right decisions in our hurried lives?
Pauline starts her work process by seeking for speed. She takes photos of the highway landscape from a moving car.  The result is different according to the speed of the car and the amount of light that is present at that specific moment.

The exhibition opened on Sunday, March 15 at 3 pm and had to closed on the same day because of the Corona Crises. The title of the expo ‘Snelheid verstilt’ which means “Limit the speed” turned into truth. It reopened on 3rd June and can be seen until 12 July. Reopening: June 3 - July 12 2020
