Gabi Mett: Lange Pfade, Detail

Gabi Mett understands textiles in material and technique as a convincing means of artistic expression that is constantly being tested anew. She works with used fabrics, especially linen, with old embroidery threads and discarded handicrafts, which she reinterprets in order to strip them of their assigned beauty and function and place them in a contemporary context.

She recently expanded her subject matter with the projects "Under my feet" and "The language of the earth(s)". Using methods from the search for traces, securing traces and field research, she collects and analyses earth from her home town and uses it in her works. The drawings, collages, textile picture objects and installations in the exhibition were created as a direct reaction to her search for local earth pigments. What all the works have in common is the deliberate reduction of pictorial means in order to achieve the desired simplicity and clarity.

Gabi Mett studied art and textile art at the Gesamthochschule Essen. She then worked for 40 years in adult education and gave workshops on artistic textile design throughout Europe. Numerous solo and group exhibitions have made her well-known at home and abroad.
