Open Call: Residency in Research & Artistic Production “Between Pattern and Memory”
Druckwerk & S-MAK & DOCK 20, Lustenau, AT
Deadline: 30.04.2026
Source: s-mak.at
DOCK 20, Druckwerk and S-MAK are jointly offering a residency under the title “Between Pattern and Memory”, which aims to explore the collection, history and present of Vorarlberg embroidery.
Embroidery is understood at the newly opened S-MAK not only as a textile product, but as a cultural practice – an interplay of design, technique, labor, and global interconnections. The residency invites participants to explore these levels through research, artistic expression, or design, and to translate them into contemporary formats.
Content and Tasks:
Lustenau's identity has been closely linked to embroidery for over 250 years. The residency involves active engagement with the S-MAK collection. Participants choose a clearly defined collection item or thematic area and develop their own research question from it.
It is expected
- Review and interpretation of archival and collection material
- Development of an independent approach
- Implementation in a contemporary form (artistic, theoretical, design-related or hybrid)
The residency is research-based. Results can be process-oriented or fragmentary (e.g., works, texts, essays, prototypes, installations, or performative formats). A public presentation is planned.
Target
audience: Artists, designers, theorists, and scholars in cultural studies, social sciences, and humanities with an interest in textiles, design history, material culture, or archival work. Interdisciplinary approaches are expressly encouraged.
