OPEN CALL: Individual work at the Haslach Textile Center in cooperation with ETN

The Textile Centre Haslach, in cooperation with the European Textile Network ETN, is announcing an artist-in-residence program for one person each in the following three areas from August 5th – 15th 2026:

  • Tufting
  • Jacquard weaving on TC1/TC2 looms
  • Jacquard weaving on an electronically controlled, industrial loom

The program aims to provide access to the infrastructure of the Textile Centre Haslach to individuals who possess the necessary technical knowledge to independently pursue their own project and dedicate themselves intensively to their work for two weeks. The relative seclusion of Haslach and the beauty of the surrounding nature offer ideal conditions for this focused work. At the same time, the technical resources at the Haslach Textile Center offer numerous options and provide additional inspiration.

Timetable:

Tuesday, 4th August: day of arrival
Wednesday, 5th August - Friday, 14 August: Working days
Friday, 14 August, evening: Presentation of the results
Saturday, 15 August: day of departure

During the first two days of the stay, experts will be available to provide training in the specific techniques. Afterward, participants should be sufficiently proficient to use the equipment independently, with flexible scheduling (except for Jacquard weaving on the industrial loom – see below).

The three participants will be provided with shared, self-catering accommodation in the immediate vicinity of the Haslach Textile Center, where each will have their own small bedroom.

Exchange among the participants and mutual inspiration are intended to be an essential part of the stay in Haslach.
At the end of the stay, a short presentation of the results will take place. In addition, each participant is required to create an article, photo series, or video about their work in Haslach in English, which will be published on the ETN website and on the Haslach Textile Center website.

+++ General requirement for an application is a valid membership in the ETN!

Conditions, technical requirements, and costs for the 3 areas:

Tufting:
In the tufting studio, there are two large and several small tufting frames, as well as various electric and pneumatic tufting guns and matching wool in different colours. Prerequisite: completed participation in a 5-day tufting workshop with Ingrid Hackl in the Textile Centre Haslach (see workshop programme of Textile Kultur Haslach at www.textile-kultur-haslach.at)
Cost (all prices incl. VAT):
Flat-rate workshop use + general and technical introduction: 360,- €
Accommodation: € 20,- / night: € 220,- for 11 nights
Material costs: 55,- € / kg (There is a selection of wool available in many colours that
 are suitable for the technique)
In case one wishes to use own materials, it must be clarified in advance whether
they can be worked with, as the tufting guns are sensitive.

Jacquard weaving on TC1/TC2 looms:
TC1 and TC2 looms (thread controllers) are handlooms with digital Jacquard control. The digital weaving files can be created in the ARAHNE CAD program or with Photoshop. At the Haslach Textile Center, a TC1 loom with 3 modules (18 threads per cm) and a warp width of 36.6 cm is available, as well as a TC2 loom with 8 modules (24 threads per cm) and a warp width of 73.3 cm. Prerequisite: Experience in weaving on TC1/TC2 looms and creating digital weaving files.
Cost (all prices incl. VAT):
Flat-rate workshop use + general introduction: 480,- €
Accommodation: € 20,- / night: € 220,- for 11 nights
Material costs: 55,- € / kg (There is a selection of different yarns available on site. You are welcome to bring your own yarn.)

Jacquard weaving on an industrial loom:
The loom at the Haslach Textile Center has a weaving width of 165 cm and weaves three repeats in the width. It is set up with a Tencel (Lyocell) warp in off-white Nm 100/2 with 48 threads per cm. After training, the CAD systems using the ARAHNE program will be operated independently. The actual weaving of your files on the industrial Jacquard loom will be carried out by a member of the Textile Centre Haslach staff by arrangement (appr. one hour per day). Prerequisites: sound knowledge of weave structure, experience in independently using CAD programs (ARAHNE or other similar programs)

Cost (all prices incl. VAT):
Flat-rate use of the workshop, general introduction, short CAD training and weaving cost on the power loom*: 660,- €
*Weaving cost: an employee of the Textile Centre Haslach is available for weaving the designs on the industrial Jacquard loom for an average of one hour per day during the entire stay.
Accommodation: € 20,- / night: € 220-, for 11 nights
Material costs are charged at €15.60 or €19.80 per running meter, depending on the weft density. (There is a good selection of yarns available on site. You may also bring your own yarns, but pls. note that the rapier system and speed of the power loom may limit the use of yarn types.)
The costs borne by the participants cover only a portion of the necessary funds; the remainder is subsidized by the Haslach Textile Center. Participants are encouraged to independently apply for grants in their respective countries. Travel and accommodation expenses are not included in the stated prices. Please also explore funding opportunities offered by the European Union.
