Region Uppsala, in collaboration with the Quilt Academy of Sweden and Uppsala Municipality, is announcing the international artist residency Art ‘n Fiber® for artists living in Europe outside the Swedish border.

The residency aims to encourage individual creativity and international artist collaboration in textile art. The artist granted is invited to give an artist talk at the Uppsala Art Museum presenting their work and sharing the context of the stay at the residency.

Included in the residency

The residency offers a grant of SEK 15,000 and an additional travel allowance up to SEK 5,000 for travel to and from Sweden. The grant is to cover a two week stay with artistic work in an accommodation provided and hosted by the Quilt Academy of Sweden, located in the countryside just outside of the city of Uppsala.

Accommodation includes a spacy studio, kitchen, bathroom and a minor bedroom. Distance to the city is 15 km and Storvreta, the closest suburb with grocery store, restaurants and
train station, is about 5 km from the residency. Optional: If adequate to the residency the selected artist is welcome to travel and stay with an assisting colleague/partner. However, note that no additional funding will be awarded for the purpose and a minor complementary fee may be requested.

Access to car transport, bicycles and spare bed is provided on request. Expenses for travel within the country, required insurances and food are not included.

Who can apply?

The residency grant is addressed to a professional artist or one with equally active artistic commitment. The applicant should be living in Europe but outside of Sweden. The artist must work primarily with textile techniques and have an explicit modern/contemporary focus based on one or some of the following techniques:

Patchwork/quilting

Free embroidery

Surface design (fabric printing/dyeing/shibori)

The working process should be based either on independent artistic work, on aim to cooperate with an art professional (or a group)  within Uppsala County or an already ongoing such collaboration.

Application deadline is May 15, 2023.
