My Language of Textiles
Galleria Moletti, Forssa, FI
24.08. – 19.09.2021
The "In My Textile Language – My Language of Textiles" exhibition is an impressive dialogue between three textile artists Päivi Vaarula, Kerstin Lindström and Cornelia Theimer Gardella at Galleria Molet in Forssa.
The exhibition brings together three artists from three different countries, united by the use of textiles as a means of artistic expression. Artists are interested in the language of textiles, hidden stories of material, and try to find an expression that respects textiles as its own art form. Päivi Vaarula, Swedish Kerstin Lindström and German Cornelia Theimer Gardella create a dialogue between their art and their individual approaches. Lindström is a strong interpreter and socially active artist. Vaarula translates emotions and situations into textile language. Theimer Gardesta's works explore the spirit of the place by focusing on colours and lines. Together, artists want to explore the intersection of their different approaches, where new meanings are created.
Mirja Niemelä, Head of Education at Häme University of Applied Sciences' "Smart and Sustainable Design" degree programme, invited artists to work in the university's digital studio. The idea for this came from artists and Mirja Niemelä liked the idea. The workshop, to be implemented in August 2021, is the first artist residencies of this type at Häme University of Applied Sciences.
Päivi Vaarula, Kerstin Lindström and Cornelia Theimer Gardella originally got to know each other in 2017 as residency artists at the Icelandic Textile Centre, Blönduós. In 2018, their paths crossed again when Vaarula and Lindström participated in a thematic artist residencies and exhibition "Space Becomes Place", held at the Not Quite Culture Center in Fengerfors, Sweden. The "Space Becomes Place" exhibition was organized by Garde with her Swedish colleague Emelie Rygfelt Wilander. Now they meet again and speak in textile language in Hämeenlinna and Forssa.
