How can old garments be turned into new textiles? How can waste generated by the textile industry be transformed into forward looking products? And what ideas exist for making meaningful use of materials created through overproduction?

Every textile is the result of a complex process: from fiber production and yarn manufacturing to fabric production and the making of garments, many individual steps are involved, each requiring extensive knowledge of materials and production techniques.

In Austria, around 220,000 tonnes of textile waste are generated every year. About three quarters of it ends up directly in residual waste. Along with these discarded textiles, not only are the skills and craftsmanship embedded in them lost, but also vast amounts of raw materials and valuable resources. A large share is exported to Africa, where the environmental and social consequences of global textile consumption are particularly severe.

The exhibition “Mist! Rethinking Textile Waste” offers insight into a new generation of textile designers and activists who are confronting these challenges with courage and fresh ideas. They are developing concepts that respond to fast fashion through clothing swaps, repair, upcycling, and zero-waste strategies. Young designers are exploring the resource of “waste” and discovering new possibilities, revealing a refreshingly new aesthetic. The exhibition presents innovative ideas for reuse and showcases forward-looking examples of contemporary design, demonstrating how leftover materials can become valuable resources.
