Material Thinking: 2nd International Contemporary Material Art Biennale
Source: facebook

Each generation forges its own way of understanding the world. The “Material Thinking”exhibition explores and visually engages with the re-emergence of the 20th century philosophy of New Materialism. The aim is to rethink our understanding of matter, materiality, bioethics, social science, technology, infrastructure and other diverse issues that are important to each new generation. Huge recent changes in the environment, population, geography and economy have provoked artists and philosophers to examine our modern world and society. It is gratifying that a philosophical movement that arose a few decades ago represents what is happening in our world today. A wave of New Materialism has re-emerged, allowing us to emphasize the role of material factors in shaping society and expressing human vision. New Materialism examines our inert understanding of matter and gives it a dynamic, sporadic and spiritual side. New Materialism explores the impact of matter in shaping our lives and our relationships with ourselves and others. Contemporary 'material art' supports this philosophical movement. As humans are immersed in the internet age, it is all the more important to explore our use of physical materials and matter itself, lest we disappear entirely into a digital world!

The basic concept (and title) of the exhibition is "Material Thinking". It is a study of the subjectivity and initiative of artists in their choice of different materials to create modern art. Qualitative research is also introduced into the exploration of contemporary material art. The primary intention in creating this academic platform is to focus on the materials used, to emphasize the power of the material, and to imagine the transformation of any given material so that different dimensions of history, life and society can unfold in relation to any given material.

Through the “Material Thinking” exhibition, the Karamay Science and Technology Museum hopes to discover new horizons in contemporary art, and to create a strong network with artists and scholars worldwide, connected by the aspiration and love for material art.
