Lotte Hofmann (LoHo), an important Baden-Württemberg craftswoman and textile artist, has been forgotten today, quite unjustly: she was honored with several awards, including the gold medal at the Milan Triennale in 1954 and a certificate of honor at the World's Fair in Brussels in 1958. Without her commitment, the Baden-Württemberg Association of Craftsmen would not exist today, for which she laid the foundation stone in 1947 with the founding of the BdK Stuttgart. We also owe her a foundation that aims to promote textile art in Germany and to honor the most important representatives of this art form. The collections of renowned museums in Germany include important works by Lotte Hofmann, but these – like her stage curtains for the Liederhalle Stuttgart and other venues – are little known to the public. The aim of the retrospective at the Max Berk Textile Collection, which is sponsored by the Baden-Württemberg Foundation and conceived by textile designer and cultural activist Nanna Aspholm-Flik M.A. and museum curator Dr. Kristine Scherer, is to change this.

Most of the exhibits come from private collections, which were identified through intensive research. For example, a suitcase containing designs comes from the collection of LoHo's second cousin, the internationally renowned theater artist Frank Soehnle. He was artistically gifted even as a child and was therefore allowed to draw on Lotte Hofmann's collection. Other important loans come from family and friends, as well as from Oberrot-Hausen, the town where Lotte Hofmann worked. All these exhibits paint a picture of a progressive, emancipated artist and businesswoman whose work and life deserve to be brought back into the spotlight. A varied accompanying program on site and at the adult education centers in Aalen and Murrhardt helps to keep alive the memory of the (almost) forgotten regional textile artist Lotte Hofmann.
