Excerpts from the MAK Helmut Lang Archive
With HELMUT LANG. SÉANCE DE TRAVAIL 1986–2005 / Excerpts from the MAK Helmut Lang Archive, the MAK dedicates the first comprehensive exhibition to Helmut Lang’s oeuvre, while simultaneously opening up a new perspective on his work within an expanded cultural context.
Drawing on the largest and only official public archive of his work—part of the MAK Collection since 2011—the exhibition offers an in-depth and previously unparalleled insight into Helmut Lang’s mindset and creative process. Conceived as a mixed-media presentation featuring large-scale, site-specific installations, the exhibition transcends the conventions of traditional fashion displays. It traces how Lang’s radical vision between 1986 and 2005 fundamentally reshaped global perceptions of clothing, space, identity, and visual communication.
Through a consistently cross-media approach, Lang challenged established industry standards as well as social conventions. His uncompromising rigor was paired with a deeply human sensibility, shaping a quiet yet radical stance—defined by integrity of character and the courage to experiment.
