1 May until 25 May 2025 NDSM FUSE, a space for contemporary art presents an exciting exhibition of textile art. NDSM FUSE is located in the large hall of the old shipyard in Amsterdam Noord. The interior of the monumental heritage building forms a contrast with the work of 21 artists.
Artist and curator Sonja Cabalt: 'Textiles connect people all over the world. For centuries, they have been used for practical purposes and as a means of self-expression. Over the past twenty years, the image of textiles in the visual arts and in design has changed profoundly. This has been caused by the re-evaluation of traditional crafts, the arrival of innovative materials, computer-controlled techniques and the need for sustainability. The exhibition presents outspoken positions on current themes such as climate change, sustainability, emigration and innovative, material technical developments. It is a powerful exploration of the expressive potential of textiles in contemporary art.’
A selection from the works:
Celia Hadeler achieves a stunning ‘trompe l'oeil' effect in her large wall hangings by means of digital tufting. Christiane Maurer weaves on a computerised loom with very fine industrial yarn, creating subtle color shades in her canvases.
Several artists, such as Francisca Henneman and Barbara Polderman, work experimentally with reused material, creating organic, free forms.
Working with textiles has a well known calming effect due to the often repetitive manual skills. Alexandra Drenth and Regula Maria Muller paint with needle and thread in their personal, rich, ornamental language. The slow creative process offers them tranquility and comfort in times of chaos.
Sonja Cabalt and John Sikking draw attention to our fragile nature with large, organic sculptures. Global themes such as land erosion and the forced displacement of people are the subject of the narrative works of Miranda Kistler and Monika Auch in their large-scale tapestries and installations.
Three artists create portraits in different formats and techniques. Dan Gonen assembles large, playful faces, Lia de Jongh embroiders fine, fragile portraits and Greet Wijtenberg makes huge, colourful masks.
