The exhibition's interior textiles and rya rugs are modern interpretation of traditional handicraft methods. The connection between design thinking and craftsmanship can be seen in these textiles that reflect the legacy of modernism. The core of the works is the relationship between material and technique.
In her work, Elina Helenius explores the interface between the simple and the decorative. How to create something beautiful and touching as simply as possible. The starting point of the textiles are different nature experiences, but the textiles don't really represent anything. Their purpose is to convey a sense-based experience to the observer.
In utility textiles, the durability of product, material and design is emphasized. Colour is at the centre of rya rugs.
The design starts from the thread, the structure creates the pattern, and the colour brings the whole to life.
Jyväskylä born textile artist Elina Helenius (born 1963) lives and works in Helsinki. Her extensive production has been presented in many international exhibitions. Helenius has been awarded in several design competitions and with the title of Textile Artist of the Year 2012, which is the most significant textile art award in Finland. It is given in recognition of high-level work professionally and artistically.
The exhibition celebrates Elina Helenius' 35-year career in textile art and design.

Elina Helenius
Textile artist TaM Elina Helenius (b. 1963) from Jyväskylä works actively in the field of design and textile art and has had a long and significant career in textiles. Helenius' extensive production, which has been presented in many international exhibitions and publications, includes utility textiles, spatial textiles related to architecture and art textiles.
Elina Helenius has been awarded in several design competitions and with the title of Textile Artist of the Year 2012, which is the most significant textile art award in Finland. The award is given in recognition of professionally and artistically high-level work.
