Astrid Bäckström (b. 1960) is a weaver and folk musician. She studied at Konstfack in the 1990s, including a year at Glasgow School of Art and Duncan of Jordandstone College, Dundee. Her latest exhibition Vävmärken was shown at the artist-run Västerås Konsthall in the spring of 2024, and before that at Handarbetets Vänner in Stockholm, together with Berit Sahlström, entitled Ta plats - Kvinnorum.
Over the years she has received grants from the Swedish Arts Grants Committee, Konstfrämjandet, the Swedish Arts Council and the City of Stockholm.
At MalmöVÄV, Astrid Bäckström is showing two woven Norns (Norse goddesses of fate), one a self-portrait of her sitting and knitting, the other a harp-playing creature. There are also two paraphrases of Ernst Josephson's Norn motif and a portrait of the writer, feminist and educator Ellen Key.
