The exhibition Anni Albers. Constructing Textiles presents the work of the important German-American artist and designer comprehensively in Austria for the first time. From her beginnings at the Bauhaus, through her influential work at Black Mountain College, to her theoretical explorations, Albers’ multifaceted oeuvre, situated between art and design, craft, teaching, and theory, comes into focus.

The exhibition is a collaboration between the Zentrum Paul Klee, Bern, and the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, Bethany, CT, in cooperation with the Belvedere, Vienna.

Curated by Fabienne Eggelhöfer (Zentrum Paul Klee, Bern) and Brenda Danilowitz (Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, Bethany, CT).
Assistant curators: Kai-Inga Dost (Zentrum Paul Klee, Bern), Kati Renner (Belvedere, Vienna).

About the exhibition
The diverse work of the artist and designer Anni Albers (1899–1994) is being honored for the first time in Austria with a major solo exhibition. Albers’ creative and experimental practice began in the 1920s at the Bauhaus. In 1933, she emigrated to the United States, where she established herself as a versatile artist. She developed complex weaving structures and used innovative fibers. In addition to pictorial weavings, which are to be regarded as autonomous works of art, Albers devoted herself to creating new textiles for buildings and interiors—so-called “useful objects.” She considered weaving to be the most advanced form of modern architectural thinking. Through her profound understanding of materials and their applications, Albers’ work remains highly relevant and significant in light of today’s challenges in the fields of energy and material resources.

Through numerous works from all phases of her career—beginning with her early years at the innovative Bauhaus in Weimar, Dessau, and Berlin, through her time at the legendary Black Mountain College, and extending into the 1980s—the exhibition presents her multifaceted career between textiles and architecture, weaving and building, past and present. It includes material studies, textile samples, and designs, as well as pictorial weavings, large-scale room dividers, carpets, curtain fabrics, and theoretical writings.
