An ‘elephant in the room’ is a widely recognized expression, used metaphorically to denote realities or dilemmas that are so obvious that they cannot simply be ignored. This phenomenon is no stranger to the fields of democracy and human rights, where their values are often treated superficially or disregarded. From a critical and poetic point of view, this exhibition brings together a group of works and artists who, in a more or less direct, more or less symbolic, more or less sharp, more or less subtle way, highlight or reveal some of the current problems of democratic values. In addition to this positioning, all the pieces integrate textiles (either through their materiality or conceptualization) and their inherent issues (identity, gender, tradition, sociology, sustainability, territoriality) into their materialization.
The works of artists Karin van der Molen, Nuno Nunes-Ferreira, Barbara Long, António Barros, Ana Perez-Quiroga, João Galera, Manuel Santos Maia, Rubén González Calzada, Susana Cereja, Prudência Coimbra and many others are presented as "metaphorical flags" in which the textile is a support, a creator of free spaces and manifest inscriptions, also and always close to the body.
