Die illusionistische Darstellung von Textilien war schon in der Malerei der Antike Ausdruck höchsten künstlerischen Könnens. Gleiches gilt auch für die Weberei, Wirkerei und Stickerei. Mit großer Fertigkeit werden hier Textilien im Textil nachgeahmt. Das kunstvolle Spiel mit Materialien, Techniken und den Erwartungen der Betrachtenden wird durch Beispiele des 4. bis 17. Jahrhunderts beredt vor Augen geführt.
