Exhibition "Patchwork & Quilts", Textile Centre Haslach // 11 May - 30 October 2019
The European Quilt Triennial is an international travelling exhibition presenting high-quality textile art from several countries. It was organized for the seventh time in 2019/20, and came to Austria for the first time, where it is on display from May 11 to October 30, 2019 in the Special Exhibition Room of the Textile Center Haslach.
41 works documenting a wide range of techniques and forms of expression, and providing a comprehensive insight into the contemporary quilt scene were selected by a jury from 161 submissions. The jurors Elisabeth Brenner-Remberg from Sweden, Gabi Mett from Germany, Leslie Morgan from England, Cosabeth Parriaud from France and Dr. med. Kristine Scherer from Germany not only used photographs and descriptions for the selection, but for the first time work samples could be submitted, which significantly influenced the decision-making process.
The works show many different approaches. An outstanding example is the work "Nightmare" by the 17-year-old quilter Malou Cecille van Draanen Glismann, that gives a critical social statement with regard to the future in a convincing artistic work in excellent execution. She was awarded the € 1,000 prize for talented junior quilters.
For the second time in a row, Urte Hanke from Coswig was awarded the € 1,000 prize for innovation for her large format work "Linear". The balance between artistic
complexity and simplicity impressed the jury, as did the dynamic format with which Urte Hanke goes beyond the boundaries of the quilt.
Judith Mundwiler from Switzerland, one of the most innovative and adventurous artists, won the Doris Winter Memorial Prize in the amount of € 5,000. The jury was impressed by the conceptual strength of the object, which traces a lifeline based on family testimonies in form of a fan-fold: not being in a straight line, some of its colours are strong, others pale. A complex network of stitches, a symbol of the family bond, holds together the very different components.
In September 2018 the travelling exhibition started in Heidelberg at the Kurpfälzisches Museum, at the Textile Collection Max Berk, which has organized the Quilt Triennial under the direction of Dr. Scherer, and then went on to the Kreismuseum Zons in Germany. After its presentation at Haslach, it will be shown at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham, UK, and at the Textile Museum St. Gallen, Switzerland.
The opening of the exhibition at Haslach took place on Fri, July 10 at 18:00 as part of the Day for the Friends and Sponsors of the Textile Center Haslach. On Saturday, May 11 at 11:30 and 15:00, special tours of the exhibition were held as part of the Action Week for the International Museum Day.
